What fits in a 10-yard dumpster?
A 10-yard dumpster holds about 3 to 5 pickup-truck loads, enough for one bathroom gut or a one-car garage. Its 3.5-ft walls are low enough to lift debris over by hand. It is also the go-to box for concrete and dirt, because heavy loads stop at the halfway line.
Typical fits for one 10-yard load:
- A small bathroom gut: tile, tub, vanity and drywall (typical)
- A 10 × 12 ft concrete patio, 4 in thick, broken up and loaded halfway (about 3 tons, so expect some overage)
- A one-car garage of boxes and old furniture (typical)
- Dirt from a small landscaping or fence-post job (typical)
Will a concrete patio in a 10-yard dumpster go over 2 tons?
A 10 × 12 ft concrete patio 4 inches thick weighs about 3 tons, so it runs about 1 ton over the 10-yard's 2 included tons. That adds about $75. The slab is 40 cubic feet of concrete, and normal-weight concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot.
Dirt is the other heavy load. Dirt typically weighs a ton or more per cubic yard, and more when wet. Five cubic yards of dirt, a 10-yard filled halfway, can weigh 5 tons or more. That is about 3 tons over, or roughly $225. Measure the area and depth first, and cover dirt if rain is coming.

Is the 10-yard too small or too big for my job?
The 10-yard is too small when the job has more than about 5 pickup loads of light debris, such as a two-car garage or a kitchen. A second haul costs a full new rental, so step up to the 15-yard. For concrete or dirt, the 10-yard is rarely too small, since weight runs out before space.
Size up to the 15-yard if you expect more than about 5 pickup loads. It includes 2.5 tons.
What is on the final bill for a 10-yard?
The final bill for a 10-yard is your quoted price plus any weight over 2 tons at $75 per ton. Add $25 for each day past 7, and $50 for each mattress, tire or Freon appliance. The certified scale ticket comes attached, 3 to 5 business days after pickup.
